Australia's online safety regulator, eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant, has accused social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, and YouTube, of not doing enough to comply with the ban. This comes three months after Australia became the first country in the world to ban children under 16 from holding social media accounts. Since the ban took effect on 10 December, five million Australian accounts belonging to under-16s have been deactivated. The eSafety report identified "poor practices" among the platforms, some allowing unlimited attempts for a user to pass age assurance checks, and others prompting users to try again even after they have declared themselves underage. The five under investigation could face court action, which can result in fines of up to 49.5 million Australian dollars ($33 million). The other five platforms are not currently under investigation.
