Scientists from the University of Costa Rica have discovered a rare, rare, high-ranking toilet in the Costa Rican cloud forests. The researchers surveyed 169 trees and found 11 communal "latrines" in the upper forks of a strangler fig tree, which were found to be common among mammals. The team set up camera traps to capture footage of these animals relieving themselves all over the tree. The findings were published in the journal Ecology and Evolution. They suspect that these trees offer everything an animal can need under one tree, including food, shelter, and pathways through the canopy.
