Another cold snap in April could cause trouble for Nebraska winery, Cellar 426 Winery, as some of Amy Hilske's grapes are flowering early due to a recent heat and sunshine, which could lead to losses of around 50-80% of their crop. The previous heat and sun could cause problems for the winery as temperatures could drop into the 30s, potentially leading to secondary buds that can grow but aren't as fruitful. To prevent frost, some vineyards use wind turbines or smudge pots, which are outdoor fire heaters used to keep orchards warm, but these options are not an option for Hilke. The only solution is to spray water atop the plants, but no irrigation set up. If necessary, Hilkes will look to nearby Iowa vineyards for additional irrigation.
