The Wikipedia has banned its 260,000 human editors from using artificial intelligence (AI) to write articles, a policy approved by volunteers at the Wikimedia Foundation’s flagship site, citing concerns over accuracy, sourcing and reliability. The move comes as part of a major crackdown on "AI slop" that often violates the site's core tenets, including verifiability and neutrality. The policy allows for limited use of AI in limited ways, such as translating articles from other languages or suggesting minor copy edits, as long as humans review every change and no new information is introduced. However, there is growing concern among Wikipedia leaders and supporters that the AI takeover has already reached too far.
