The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has warned that over 1,000 Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers have left their jobs and that it will soon run out of money to pay department staffers due to the partial government shutdown. The shutdown, which began on February 14, is the longest in American history. Since TSA agents are deemed essential workers, they can continue working even if they're not being paid. Many TSA officers called out of work last month to cover additional jobs and hundreds more left their positions entirely. The shortage of TSA agents led to long security wait times at airports across the country. The Trump Administration has used existing funds from the President's One Big Beautiful Bill to pay TSA staffers during the shutdown. However, Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin warned that the department will soon be running out of funds to pay staffers by the beginning of May.
