Scientists have successfully measured the power and speed of black hole jets for the first time, using high-resolution radio imaging obtained by a global telescope network. The jet power from this system, Cygnus X-1, is equivalent to 10,000 suns and the jet speed is half the speed of light. The researchers found that 10% of all energy released as matter falls toward the black hole is carried away by the jets. The findings could help scientists better understand how black holes shape galaxies and other cosmic structures.
