Ryan Coogler's film, Sinners, has been accused of racism by fans after it loses awards. The film, which earned $370 million at the box office and holds a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, broke the all-time record for Oscar nominations with 16. It also swept the ensemble prize. However, critics argue that every loss to another film, such as One Battle After Another, which won most major prizes, is proof of cultural theft. The backlash started at the Critics' Choice Awards, where Timothée Chalamet won Best Actor for Marty Supreme over Sinners. Fans also accused the Golden Globes of racial bias. The criticism has been exacerbated by Hollywood's history of sidelining Black filmmakers and Black stories at awards time. The use of the word "racism" in the online discourse has been used to create a false narrative. Sinners is a film about what happens when communities are manipulated into thinking differently.
