Fresno Unified is cutting hundreds of positions, including hundreds of layoffs, to save $60 million amidst a budget deficit. The district has been battling budget deficits year after year due to declining student enrollment and lower average daily attendance. Currently, it is facing a $77 million shortfall and is reducing the total number of employees by 383.8 full-time equivalent positions. This includes the elimination of 183 retirement and vacant positions. The move will generate $60m in savings, but only $39.8 million will be actual reductions. The remaining funds will be used to support students. The Fresno Teachers Association (FTA) has argued that the cuts will harm the district and lead to less support, staff burnout, and more students leaving the district. The layoffs process will begin in mid-May.
