The Academy Awards have hosted at least three times since the first ceremony in 1929. The most memorable emcees were comedians like Billy Crystal, who hosted nine ceremonies, while Whoopi Goldberg held four. Johnny Carson hosted the Oscars five times before his death in 2005. Jack Lemmon hosted four times and is a two-time winner. Ellen DeGenez, who has hosted more than three times, is the only woman to have hosted or co-host the awards ceremony. Kimmel has also made history as the first Black woman to emcee the Oscars solo, and is one of the few stars to earn an EGOT (Oscar and Tony Award).
