A fiery asteroid that broke up in the skies of Ohio caused explosions heard as far as New York and Virginia, according to NASA. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration reported eyewitnesses in Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, the District of Columbia and the Canadian province of Ontario. The asteroid was detected by the Geostationary Lightning Mapper on a satellite and several cameras in the region. It reportedly flew east at about 40,000 mph before fragmenting 30 miles over Valley City, north of Medina, in Ohio. The explosion may have caused booms and explosive noises heard by the public.
