The United Independent School District (UISD) is considering a $30 million loan from PNC Bank as its unassigned reserves are projected to fall to as little as $2 million by the end of the month. The district has already eliminated over 270 positions and reduced the use of charter buses as part of its cost-cutting efforts. The proposed $30M loan would cover payroll and daily operating costs through the winter months. To qualify for a potential second loan of up to $60 million, the district must demonstrate it is reducing expenses. If approved, the funds are expected to be deposited by the mid-August to secure the upcoming payroll cycle. Additional school closures could be announced as early as October. Superintendent Gerardo Cruz is also expected to ask for a districtwide hiring freeze to offset rising health insurance costs.
