Henry Cloud Andrade and Crystle Lightning, the creators of the parody musical Bear Grease, have been working on reimagining the classic 1978 movie musical with indigenous traditions and hip hop. The show, which includes an all-indigenous cast, has been touring for over four years and recently ran off-Broadway. The INDY spoke to Lightning and Andrade about the meaning behind the name Bear Greased and its references to indigenous culture. They also explained the significance of bear grease in their show, a sacred medicine used to heal anything from scrapes to the skin, to the heart. The duo also shared their intention to connect with local native communities through community events.
