Home design trends like open floor plans, color drenching and "millennial gray" are being replaced by separate dining rooms, earthy tones and marble, according to local designers. The average San Diego home is 1,500 square feet, and designers have to adapt to odd layouts and tract houses built in the 1950s. The idea of a separate and formal dining room is returning, with one wall between the kitchen and dining room or a peninsula dividing the living room from the kitchen. The challenge is to create distinct areas without feeling claustrophobic in small houses. The trend of "moody aesthetic" is also on its way out, with people still seeking a "warm neutral" aesthetic.
