The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has banned almost all wireless routers used in US homes from sale within the country due to national security concerns. The ruling states that all routers made outside the US pose unacceptable risks to the national security of the US or the safety and security of US persons. This means ISPs will have to switch to US models and most routers currently sold to consumers will need to be withdrawn from sale. The ban is so extensive that it is difficult for router makers to apply for an exemption by proving their devices are safe. The decision comes after the FCC banned the importation and sale of foreign-made drones last year due to security concerns, and reclassified them as tools for surveillance and intelligence collection.
