Cave City coming back stronger one year after devastating tornado
Published on March 18, 2026.
A year ago, a tornado outbreak in north Arkansas claimed three lives in Independence County, with Cave City, the second-largest population center in Sharp County, being directly hit by an EF-3 tornado that destroyed dozens of homes and businesses. Despite injuries, no deaths were reported in Cave City. The town's 20 businesses were destroyed or damaged, including a park store, funeral home, grocery store, dentist office, and pharmacy. Despite initially denying federal aid, the White House allowed families to receive financial assistance to rebuild their homes. The recovery has been remarkable due to the spirit of the people who live in the town, with residents rallying to rebuild and host the biggest annual Cave City town festival ever seen.
