Boston's first recreational cannabis dispensary, Pure Oasis, closed its doors last week due to mounting debts and a frozen account by the Department of Revenue (DOR) due to delinquent taxes. The company owes DOR roughly $400,000, which co-owner Kobie Evans was negotiating a payment plan with Sen. Liz Miranda. The department was reportedly unwilling to consider alternatives before freezing the account. Despite these setbacks, the company's 60 employees have not been paid and Evans is now focusing on getting his account unfrozen so they can be paid. The closure comes amid rising costs, an oversaturated flower market, and limited resources for cannabis business owners. The state Executive Office of Economic Development plans to distribute the funds in the coming weeks.
