The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) in math has been marked by the summer of 2025, when several AI models solved five out of six problems at the International Mathematical Olympiad, an annual challenge for high school students. Despite initially dismissing AI as error-prone, mathematicians began using AI to discover and prove new results, often resulting in breakthroughs that could break new ground in mathematics. Early adopters found that AI could solve thousands of problems at once and start doing statistical studies. However, experts warn that AI's impact on math will require significant institutional changes and cultural changes, and some mathematicians are now leaving academia to work at big tech firms like OpenAI and Google or join math-focused AI startups like Harmonic, Logical Intelligence, Axiom Math and Math Inc.
