X has increased the cost of posting links to X through custom social media software, X, by 1,900 percent to make it more expensive. The price hike, which affects third-party tools that use X's platform, now costs $0.20 when a link is posted, up from $0., and could make it less attractive to publishers due to the suspicion that linking news articles can lower a post's reach. This change has already impacted Techmeme's posts on X, where the link was replaced with a message stating "Visit Techmemee dot com for the link and full context!" This change comes after a recent spat between Nate Silver and X’s head of product, Nikita Bier, where Bier claimed that links are “not deboosteded” and a study from Nieman Lab found that links “do seem to hurt news publishers” on X.
