The Senate unanimously passed a bill to fund the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), except for Immigration and Customs Enforcement and parts of Customs and Border Protection. This follows February when Senate Democrats refused to pass DHS funding, causing TSA workers to go unpaid. The GOP hopes this will tide the agencies over until the GOP can use budget reconciliation to fund them. However, Senate Majority Leader John Thune argued that Democrats had held TSA workers hostage while seeking reforms in immigration enforcement operations. The deal comes after President Donald Trump ordered DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin to pay TSA agents with the money DHS has in its various accounts. If the House does not approve the Senate’s legislation, President Mike Johnson has not committed to approving it.
