MN Capitol: Anti-fraud measures move while guns, ICE restrictions stall

The Minnesota Legislature's legislative session has been largely focused on anti-fraud measures, gun control, and the effects of a federal immigration crackdown. Despite both Republicans and Democrats expressing interest in creating a new independent watchdog to combat fraud and waste in state agencies, bills supporting DFL-backed assault weapons ban and restrictions on federal immigration agents are stalled in a narrowly-divided government. However, the DFL has a one-seat majority in the Senate and the House is tied 67-67 between the parties, meaning any lawmaking proposal requires bipartisan consensus. The first legislative deadline for bills passed Friday evening was 5pm, with many proposals that didn't see action by 5pm. The next deadline for favorable action on bills is April 17. Other issues still remain unclear, but leaders from both parties remain optimistic.
