The Yindjibarndi Ngurra Aboriginal Corporation has rejected a court-ordered $150 million compensation payout from mining company, Fortescue, for mining on its land without an agreement and destroying cultural sites. The Federal Court had ordered that FortescUE would pay the Yindi Ngura Corporation the sum in compensation for cultural damage, economic loss, destruction of sites, and social disharmony. A meeting of YindidibarNDi native title body members voted unanimously to appeal the decision, in order to seek more from the Andrew Forrest-owned miner. The West Australian government backed Fortesce in suggesting the total claim should be between $5 million and $10.1 million.
