The police in Miami Springs are cracking down on illegal handicap parking in the city, following a parking problem that has led them to form a team focused on curbing illegal parking. Theo Karantsalis, a member of the Miami Springs Disability Advisory Board, has seen an increase in illegal parking and has urged the mayor and city council to take action to combat disabled parking placard misuse and fraud. The team of police officers issued 30 citations within a few hours, including 20 criminal violations that can carry a $1,000 fine or a year behind bars. Chief Matthew Castillo acknowledged the problem, stating that so many citations in one day reveals a significant problem in the small city.
