Florida Republican gubernatorial candidate, Rep. Byron Donalds, wrongly blames schools for rising property taxes, stating that they are the main drivers of property tax increases. He supports eliminating all property taxes on primary residences, which would significantly reduce public school funding. However, school districts control some of the local tax money they receive and can lower certain rates, but any increases are subject to caps or voter approval. The University of Tampa associate economics professor, Abigail Hall, noted that most of what is happening in terms of school funding is outside of school districts' control. Florida public schools received around 40% of the state’s property tax revenue in recent years and typically make up the largest share of local taxes in homeowners’ bills. The state's property tax revenues have also increased, with average home sale price rising from $383,000 in 2020 to $534,000 by nearly 40% in 2025.
