Peru Looks to Kick Presidential Problems in Upcoming Election
Published on March 31, 2026.
The Republic of Peru is set to vote on April 12 to select its next government. The South American country has been beset by persistent corruption, rampant crime, disappointing economic growth, and political instability. No Peruvian president has served out a full term since 2016. The last elected president was Pedro Castillo, a left-wing populist with little governing experience, who quickly alienated supporters with his erratic style of rule and constant clashes with Congress. His replacement, Vice President Dina Boluarte, inherited a legitimacy crisis and then compounded it. She presided over a crime wave that has left Peru more dangerous than it has been for decades. Recent polls show two conservative candidates, Keiko Fujimori and Rafael López Aliaga, leading the fragmented field. The most likely result is a runoff in June.
