Google is considering increasing use of natural gas to power its AI ambitions, according to a report by market intelligence platform Cleanview. The report suggests that while Google has been known for prioritizing clean energy in its data centers, it may now lean more on fossil fuel. The company is partnering with Crusoe Energy to build a data center campus in North Texas called "Goodnight," powered largely by a massive on-site natural gas plant alongside a wind farm. However, whether Google will buy power from the gas plant remains an issue. This shift from clean energy to natural gas could align with Google's stated goal of becoming carbon-free by 2030, but may face scrutiny as it is seen as leading the tech industry in deploying clean energy for its ambitions.
