Florida's Loggerhead Marinelife Center is using satellite tracking devices to monitor the animals they have rehabilitated, particularly those of amputees. The technology is being used to study how well sea turtles can survive in the wild after losing a limb. Amelie, a 3-limbed Kemp’s ridley turtle who lost her right forelimb to a shark, was brought to the center after a traumatic amputation and underwent surgery to clean and close the wound, and was treated for pneumonia while in a tank at the center. Researchers have glued a tracking device to her shell and are tracking her movements.
