Cleveland cannot let lead screening and testing progress slip away: Robert Eick
Published on April 15, 2026.
Cleveland's lead poisoning problem is rooted in structural issues such as aging housing and longstanding inequities. Robert Eick, president and CEO of the Better Health Partnership, argues that the city cannot let lead screening and testing progress slip away. The program, administered by the Lead Safe Cleveland Coalition, has increased lead-testing rates at well visits from 69.3% in 2025 to 75.7% in 2026. This move means roughly 380 additional children were screened allowing for intervention and follow-up when crucial times are crucial. Eick suggests a centralized approach to prevent families from falling through the cracks of care coordination across health care, public health, and community services. The next phase of improvement will focus on strengthening early detection and expanding family-centered care coordination.
