Sherwood tornado victims face hurdles rebuilding

Property owners are beginning to plan reconstruction of homes destroyed in the March 6 tornado in Sherwood Township, Michigan. The township and Branch-Hillsdale-St. Joseph Health Agency are working to ease the process while staying within state and local laws. Many of the lots are nonconforming to current zoning codes, according to Sherwood Supervisor Toren Stanton. The board approved measures to allow storm-damaged homeowners to rebuild on their original foundations without needing variances. Environmental Health Director Joe Frazier said owners must first confirm they meet current well and septic codes to rebuild. John Horton, who has been dealing with difficulties navigating zoning and inspection requirements, expressed frustration over the process.
