The Bee Gees were one of the most popular pop groups in the world from the late ‘60s to the late '70s, with hits such as "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart," "I Started a Joke," and "To Love Somebody. However, their career began to decline after their most recent album and single, "Saw a New Morning," failed to impress audiences due to their harmonies on "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson" in 1973. The band's first number 1 hit, "Massachusetts," was written about the migration of young people to San Francisco in 1967, but the band had never been to the state. They would soon find a new sound, disco music, and become one of their most popular acts in the '80s and '90s. Their last performance on the show was on March 23, 1973, when they performed "Wouldn’t I Be Someone" and "More Than a Woman" on "Up Up".
