The Data Center World conference in DC, DC, saw a shift in focus on power and public trust as a key issue at the industry. The industry's low-profile approach in buying up land and building facilities has led to increased community opposition, particularly in Data Center Alley. The shift was highlighted by concerns about utility costs and environmental impacts on infrastructure. As many as half of the planned data center projects to go online in 2026 are delayed globally, developers are seeking short-term power solutions. Many are building their own energy generation on site, often via natural gas, following the Trump administration's non-legally binding and volunteer ratepayer protection pledges. Industry leaders also emphasized the need to engage with communities directly in order to tell their story. Local, state and federal policymakers need to work more on data center development.
