The article discusses the importance of AI technology to create a custom prom dress in Florida, highlighting the energy-intensive nature of tasks such as creating a pattern based on estimates of fabric usage and energy consumption. The article suggests that while AI technology is free, the energy it takes to produce one image of a fantasy prom dress requires a physical presence, physical space, pipelines, and often, water to help keep them cool. However, the article also notes that data centers are increasingly becoming more energy intensive, consuming so much electricity that power companies are having to increase capacity to generate power. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has proposed comprehensive regulations on where new data centers can be located, who should pay for the power-generating infrastructure and how much water they will need, but these reforms have been weakened. The legislation (SB 484) hasn't yet been delivered to DeSantas' signature. The editorial suggests that Floridians benefit from the availability of AI, availability and costs, but should also be able to understand the implications of this technology.
