A California bill aimed at preventing trillion-dollar tech companies from favoring their own products has failed after a lobbying campaign by Apple. The BASED Act, named SB 1074, would prevent companies with at least $1 trillion in market value from prioritizing their own services over competitors and restrict third-party data use. The bill also prohibits a covered provider from manipulating search results or rankings to favor their own product or services. However, a pushback campaign by the California Chamber of Commerce and the big tech trade group Chamber of Progress was launched before the bill advanced through an initial committee vote. Despite efforts by giants like Y Combinator to counter the opposition, Senator Scott Wiener indicated he may not be done with this proposal.
