The 2026 FIFA World Cup is set to bring massive crowds, global attention, and a tourism boost to New Jersey and New York. However, regular NJ Transit commuters may still be able to get to New York City on World Cup match days. The transportation plan for the eight World Cup matches will require temporary changes for commuters who rely on NJ Transit. The biggest impact will occur 4 hours before kickoff and 3 hours after each match, with no outbound NJ Transit rail service from New York Penn Station available for regular commuter travel during this pre-match window. Commuters with existing rail tickets or passes with New York will have to use alternative options, including PATH from 33rd Street and NJ Transit buses from the Port Authority Bus Terminal. Commuter travel will also be affected by additional delays and increased costs. The World Cup will be spread across several regions, potentially causing travel disruptions during summer travel.
