Psychotherapist Natalie Buchwald, founder and clinical director of Manhattan Mental Health Counseling, believes that pet relationships, particularly those of individuals, can reveal their deepest emotional wounds through their pets. She believes that their conversations about their pets indicate what is missing in their human relationships. A survey conducted by OnePoll found that over half of dog owners cite unconditional love as the greatest benefit of pet ownership and 81 percent talk to their dog the same way they would talk to a close friend. London-based psychotherapist Nino Sopromadze suggests that the pet relationship can indicate an internal judgment, suggesting that being seen by others may feel risky. The survey also found that 58 percent of pet owners prefer spending time with their pets over their partners, family, or friends when stressed.
