Michigan ended its 37-year national championship drought with a commanding NCAA Tournament run, ending with a combined plus-114 point margin in the tournament, the seventh-highest total ever by a national champion and sixth-best since the field expanded in 1985. The Wolverines overcame a program and coach, UConn, who entered the title game 6-0 all-time in national championship contests. Despite a shooting percentage of 38.2% in the championship game, the lowest by a winning team since North Carolina in 1999, Michigan's defense performed well. The team also reached an impressive total of 541 total points in the NCAA Tournament, the second-most by an unnamed national champion behind only 1990 UNLV.
