Mastic Beach Man Bolted From Officers In Stolen U-Haul Involved In Hit-And-Run In Farmingville: Police

A New York man, Gerald Matzen, fled from a traffic stop in a stolen U-Haul van and was involved in a hit-and-run crash in Farmingville, Suffolk County, on Sunday morning. The vehicle was reported stolen from the rental company and was abandoned after officers attempted to pull over it. Matzen was located and charged with various charges including fourth-degree criminal possession of a narcotic drug, seventh-degree possession of an unspecified substance, leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash with property damage, and unlawful fleeing a police officer. The driver and passenger, Edwin Jefferson, were also found on nearby John Drive and were charged with multiple outstanding warrants. The pair were held overnight at the 6th Precinct in Selden for arraignment in First District Court in Central Islip.
