Experts have suggested that Florida's part-time citizen Legislature may have outgrown due to its large population, $115 billion budget, and complex issues such as housing affordability and high property insurance costs. The Florida Legislature must meet for two months to address state business, passing bills and approving a balanced budget. However, for the second consecutive year, they failed to pass a budget by the end of the regular 60-day session, leading to overtime work. The Legislature is set to reconvene for a special session on redrawing congressional maps on April 20. Since 2000, the state has spent $4.85 million on the Legislature's special sessions. Only 10 states have full-time legislatures, where lawmakers put in at least 80% of a full schedule and are paid a livable wage that doesn't require outside employment.
