Aurora Mayor John Laesch has stated that he is not in a hurry to appoint the next chief of the city's fire department, following a delay in the appointment of Mark Bozik. The City Council had been set to consider Bozik as the new chief, but the matter was removed from the agenda less than 12 hours before the meeting. Former Aurora Fire Chief Gary Krienitz called the appointment a wrong decision, stating it would harm the city, its residents, and the firefighters. David McCabe, who succeeded Krieniz as fire chief, expressed frustration and disappointment over Laeschech's pick for the role, urged aldermen to vote against the appointment and to review internal candidates again. Since McCabe's retirement, Deputy Chief Kevin Nickel has served as interim fire chief.
