The recent court rulings by major tech company Meta Platforms Inc. have strengthened Utah's resolve to pursue legal action against social media companies, which have been accused of creating addictive platforms and creating a virtual danger zone for children online. The company, which owns Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, Messenger and Threads, was found guilty of violating state consumer protection laws and ordered to pay $375 million in civil damages to the state. The first trial was held in New Mexico, where the state’s attorney general accused Meta of allowing predators to manipulate and take advantage of minors online, resulting in a verdict of $4.2 million in damages and $1.8 million for Google. However, both companies are expected to appeal the decision. Utah's governor, Spencer Cox, stated that these losses support his efforts to hold social media firms accountable and protect children.
