The Governor of Hawaii has asked the federal government to contribute 90% of the cost of relief after back-to-back Kona Low systems caused extensive damage to neighborhoods around Central Oʻahu and the island's south shore. The damage from the Kona low storms is estimated to cost at least $1 billion and is expected to rise. Governor Josh Green said that Kula Hospital on Maui will need to be replaced and will likely cost hundreds of millions of dollars. Other major costs include $40 million of roads, $100 million in airport repairs, and hundreds of billions in rebuilding houses. The city has launched a portal for reporting residential flood damage and plans to aggregate data to make a case for federal assistance. The department previously announced it would close three Kona schools on the Big Island this week and Konawaena High School will transition to online learning due to extensive repairs.
