Julie Gerdes Becnel, a local author, has created her own children's book, Roux's First Day, inspired by Louisiana folklore and childhood imagination. The book follows a young rougarou preparing for her first day of school, where she encounters fellow swamp creatures who share their own insecurities. The protagonist is portrayed as a child-friendly, relatable character, while the setting, including BREC’s Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center, plays a significant role. The story shifts from being scary to something deeply human. The author hopes the book will inspire children to feel more confident or more prepared for school.
