Alabama AD calls for scrapping SEC Championship game: ‘Ship has sailed’

Alabama athletic director Greg Byrne has called for the end of the SEC Championship game, stating that the tradition of such games is waning due to the growing College Football Playoff adding games to the schedule. The SEC became the first conference to introduce a championship game in 1992, followed by other major leagues in the sport. However, Byrne believes that with the expansion of the CFP increasing to 12 teams, the feasibility of conference championship games is now waning. He also suggested that expanding the playoff to 16 teams would create more compelling content for the event.
