Chief Justice John Roberts has warned against personal attacks on the judiciary, stating that while criticism of opinions is fair, such as "personally directed hostility" is dangerous. This comes after President Donald Trump criticised the court's decision against his sweeping tariffs as an "embarrassment" to their families. Roberts did not mention Trump by name and stressed that the attacks were not from one political perspective. He also mentioned past chief justices, William Howard Taft and Charles Evans Hughes, who were influential during President Franklin D. Roosevelt's efforts to add justices to the Supreme Court.
