Most desktop users have at least one M.2 slot in their PC, but these slots are often not just for storage. They can be used for other functions such as faster Ethernet or Wi-Fi connections, a USB port expansion, or an extra GPU. To find out how many slots your motherboard has, use CPU-Z - a safe and reliable app that helps quickly locate these slots. M. 2 slots connect directly to your motherboard's PCIe lanes, which are several orders of magnitude faster than older interfaces like SATA. If an older PC has only one or two USB-C ports, it can be converted into USB-A ports using a USB expansion card. The most common device for additional storage is an NVMe SSD.
