New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has declared that his administration is the "2026 answer to sewer socialism," a term coined by Morris Hillquit in 1932. Unlike Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, who spends political capital on unpopular causes such as closing schools for a day to teach kids how to talk like their teacher’s union wants, he is rebranding socialism as a way of fixing small problems in a larger city. Mamdan's administration has already filled over 100,000 potholes and is moving forward on major projects such as the redesigning the historic Soldiers’s Memorial Arch and a new pedestrian market.
