Amira, an AI-powered reading assistant and tutor, has been used to help students learn to read at Matheson Park Elementary School in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The New Mexico Public Education Department began using Amira after the software provider Istation was acquired by Amira Learning. The state of New Mexico is requiring all students in kindergarten through second grade to take reading assessments on Amira, which is approved up to grade eight. However, teachers and staff at Albuquerque Public Schools have expressed concern over the accuracy of Amira's scores compared to students' actual abilities. Some schools like Mathesons Park have been successful in using Amir, with reading scores up nearly 30% since the start of the year. However teachers have reported instances of speech and dialect variability and environmental and technical interference. Amira sometimes does not recognize voices of students with speech disabilities or foreign accents, and sometimes picks up background noise and voices of other students, leading to inaccurate results.
