Seattle puts Microsoft Copilot expansion on hold as new mayor takes stock of the AI technology

The City of Seattle has delayed the rollout of Microsoft Copilot for city employees, pending the arrival of its new mayor, Mayor Katie Wilson, who had approved the launch before leaving office in December. The delay comes five months after Seattle released a "responsible AI plan" which provides guidelines for the municipality's use of artificial intelligence. The city conducted a pilot test of Copilot with 500 employees and saved more than 450 hours of work per week. While implementation of the technology is delayed, ongoing education and governance work continues. Concerns about municipal AI regulations and oversight are widespread, with concerns about bias and reliability.
