A NASA satellite, Van Allen Probe A, is set to crash back to Earth on March 10 after nearly 14 years in orbit. The spacecraft, which launched in August 2012 with its twin, V. Allen Probe B, and were deactivated in 2019, are expected to reenter at 7:45 p.m. EDT (2345 GMT), plus or minus 24 hours later. Most of the spacecraft will burn up as it travels through the atmosphere, but some components are likely to survive reentry. The risk of harm to anyone on Earth is low, with only 0.02% due to the fact that water covers about 70% of Earth's surface. The mission was supposed to last two years, but the spacecraft managed to continue operating until July 2019 (Probe B) and October 2019.
