AI threatens Big Law's talent pipeline

Artificial intelligence is disrupting the legal profession's early-career pipeline, which relies heavily on junior and summer associates, potentially leading to a long-term talent crisis. Major firms are using AI technology to embed knowledge of their lawyers into AI workflows, client portals, and self-service tools, according to Stanford Law professor David Freeman Engstrom. However, Tiffany J. Tucker, assistant dean for career development at the University of Houston Law Center, believes AI may create new legal jobs rather than eliminate entry-level ones. Major law firms are already restructuring around AI, using it for research, litigation prep, document review and case law, and judges are beginning to use it for drafting and summarizing opinions. Some major firms are adjusting their headcounts as the "efficiency paradox" takes hold, reducing the need for billable human hours.
