The deadly hantavirus outbreak on the MV Hondius, which left three dead and eight ill, could impact the way cruise lines screen passengers before boarding, according to industry expert David Yeskel. The Dutch couple who brought the virus onto the ship, who later succumbed to the disease, are believed to have contracted the virus from rodents. Cruise lines may require passengers to complete a detailed travel history covering the previous eight weeks as a precautionary measure and self-report any symptoms experienced at the time of boarding. However, there is a significant gap in the theory as neither the site nor the surrounding province of Tierra del Fuego had ever recorded a case of the hantivirus.
